"Darkly comedic, Mike A. Smith's Missionary is muscular animation that deftly captures the nuance of human behavior." "Quixotically eccentric... A great parable for an age of clashing belief systems." (Missionary) "A spirited tribal paean to hunting and gathering." (Lithos) "I was particularly impressed by the way Smith managed to represent our lives as an outsider looking in." (Hominid) "The pencil and crayon drawings, delicate and nuanced, add an organic feel that I really like." (Missionary) "An inspired collection of work."

Between growing up in New York State and settling in Portland, Oregon, Mike has traveled on six continents, moved some tons of dirt for archaeology, and once was chased by a monkey. He first started animating as a kid with a borrowed Super 8 camera and some plasticine, going on to work with everything from cutouts to paint-on-glass to Maya. Mike's award-winning short films have competed in festivals as far away as Norway, Italy, and China. From 2009 to 2011, he served as president of ASIFA Portland, the Portland-area chapter of the international animation society. |
